Digital Photography Tips

The following digital photography tips will help you capture the shots that make your digital photography stand out.

Tip 1. Take lots of shots. Of all the digital photography tips, this is the one that will make the biggest difference in your photography outcome.  Since you don’t have the limitations of film, you can just keep on clicking until you get a shot without someone making a face, shutting their eyes, or looking silly.  The best part of this tip is that you will discover the best shot is the one just after you took the shot that people posed for.  The picture taking is done, they think, and they relax and as they relax they look like themselves, not some fake-smile version of themselves.

Tip 2. Get close. If you have zoom on your camera, use it.  Pictures are a lot better when you can see the expressions on people’s faces. Don’t be afraid to get as close as possible and take the photo. It cuts back on the distracting elements around the central subject of your photography and saves a lot of time trying to rescue the photo by cropping off the edges.

Tip 3. Know your camera modes. Depending on the complexity of your camera, there may be a choice of modes. You don’t need to know them all but you do need to know one mode and know it well to take top-notch photos. Start with the Auto mode if you have it. Auto will control flash and exposure and leave you free to experiment with technique.  If your camera has only the Program mode, you may have to control the flash setting yourself and perhaps a couple of other settings. Play with these until you know what works best for you.  If you are just beginning and your camera does not have the Auto mode, work on knowing when flash helps and when it doesn’t.

Tip 4. Compose your shot.  Before you point and click, think of what you want to capture and focus on that.  Aiming and a crowd and snapping photos will give you cluttered results. Compose the shot using the rule of thirds.  This is a real secret digital photography tip that will instantly give you winning photos.  It is simply this – don’t put the main subject smack dab in the middle of the shot. Put the main subject off to the left or right of the center, placing them about one-third of the way in from the edge of the photo.
